Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a Hayman Island wedding? When Abbie first mentioned to me that she was planning to get married at Hayman I couldn’t hide my look of surprise, as her family runs Victoria’s at Ewingsdale, a divine wedding venue in the hills of Byron Bay. Within the next second however, I realised how right she was. There surely couldn’t be a better way for her family & friends to completely relax than being on an island sipping on cocktails, far far away from any thought of work! The only draw-back in Abbie’s eyes was that her “other man”, a young, handsome, hairy fellow named Ollie (her beloved dalmatian), wouldn’t be able to come. However in the end he was definitely there in other ways… at the reception table and the first dance!!
Hayman Island in September is perfect. Perfect warm weather, perfect whales jumping out of the ocean, perfect flowering orchids and the most perfectly turquoise water you can ever see. The One & Only Resort had just reopened after being re-furbished, and so it was looking pretty good too. As if by divine providence an immense full “super moon” rose over the horizon just after Abbie & Anthony’s first dance. Is it always that perfect, or did we just get lucky?
Something tells me though, that with all of this ‘perfection’…. as long as Abbie & Anthony had their friends & family with them it really wouldn’t have mattered where they got married. While there is pleasure in beautiful locations and beautiful things (and as a photographer I certainly love photographing these), it was Abbie & Anthony’s close connection with their friends and family plus their relaxed approach to the day that truly made their wedding great.
Abbie & Anthony, thank you yet again for inviting me to photograph your incredible day. Abbie – I will always remember your infectious laugh and radiant smile; Anthony – I’ll never forget your razor-sharp ‘Blue Steel’!! Warmest wishes to you both for many beautiful adventures (with Ollie & Will and other furry friends) throughout the years ahead. Lastly, massive thanks to my fantastic partner Ed for assisting me, forever & always my wing-man and my rock.
